Leon Chrzanowski (1829-1899)

Historian, political commentator and conservative politician. 

He graduated in philosophy and law from the Jagiellonian University. He was the nephew of General Wojciech Chrzanowski. He took part in the Cracow Uprising of 1846, then he made his way to Prussia, where he was imprisoned. When he managed to leave the prison, he went into exile and lived in France and Switzerland. On his return to Poland he joined the editorial board of the Kraków-based conservative daily Czas, where he headed the political section. He was affiliated with the Whites, and during the January Uprising he was a member of the Western Galicia Committee. He was imprisoned by the Austrian authorities, this time for two years. He was a member of the Galician National Sejm: from the curia of the 1st Kraków district in its second term (1867-1869) and from the curia of the 3rd Kraków district in its third, fourth, fifth and sixth terms (1870-1876, 1877-1882, 1882-1889, 1889-1895) – and the Council of State in Vienna. He wrote, among others, Chwile teraźniejsze i posłannictwo Polski (Paris 1846), Odsiecz Wiednia (1876).
